Are the firefighters paid?

The Lawrenceville Fire Company has a paid staff of two (2) firefighters that are on duty from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. All other firefighters are volunteers and receive no pay for their services.

How old do I have to be to become a firefighter?

You need to be at least 14 years old to be qualified as a junior member. Junior members are restricted at fire scene operations and learn the overall operation of a fire department. They are encouraged to attend as many meetings, drills and functions as possible. You need to be 18 years old to become a firefighter.

What do I have to do to become a firefighter?

You have to submit an application for membership, meet all membership requirements and be accepted by the membership committee.

To become and active firefighter you have to complete the State of New Jersey Firefighter I course offered at the Mercer County Fire Academy Center (Dempster Center).

Do I have to have special training to be a firefighter?

Yes, all firefighters in New Jersey attend a minimum of 120 hours of training.

Who can be a firefighter?

Anyone! No matter what your training is in, or if you have been to college or not, we are looking for new faces at the firehouse.

Why do we have so many trucks?

Because each truck is specialized with equipment that is needed in case of an emergency.

Who pays for the apparatus?

The Township of Lawrence purchases the majority of the apparatus in Lawrence Township. Several of the smaller vehicles are purchased by the fire company with money from donations.

Where do my donation go?

We use all donations to purchase specialized equipment that is needed in case of an emergency. Also the donations go for maintenance and repair of the firehouse. For example, communication devices, firefighter clothing (turn-out gear, fire gloves, helmets, extrication gloves, boots, etc), hose, tools, emergency rations, etc.
